Capital and skilled labor flooding into AI data center construction is creating a zero-sum squeeze on housing, transportation, and grid modernization projects. The $100+ billion annual bet on AI infrastructure is pricing out competing priorities that affect daily lives. Construction crews, electrical engineers, and financing capacity that could upgrade electrical grids or build affordable housing are instead being offered premiums to work on computing facilities that primarily benefit a handful of tech companies. The economic tradeoff is becoming visible at the municipal level, where data center projects are outbidding hospitals and schools for real estate and power supply.
