The capital available to AI companies outside the hyperscaler quartet has abruptly contracted. CoreWeave's distressed bond pricing, Anthropic's pivot to IPO after failing to meet fundraising targets, and OpenAI's retreat from a $30B round to $20B largely from non-institutional sources all reflect this shift. A structural problem emerges: Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Meta can self-fund buildout through operating cash flow and cheap debt, while the constellation of AI infrastructure, chip, and application companies without their own revenue moat now face a capital wall. The likely result is consolidation, slower deployment timelines, and reduced competition in non-hyperscaler segments.
