The recent market selloff exposed a structural vulnerability: mega-cap AI stocks are so concentrated in institutional portfolios—pension funds, bond allocators, index trackers—that their valuations now function as collateral for the entire financial system. When Nvidia, Microsoft, and the "Magnificent Seven" decline, retirees' defined benefit obligations, corporate debt spreads, and leveraged positions all move in lockstep. There's no longer a diversification buffer if these valuations correct. The risk extends beyond the tech sector. A genuine AI repricing could trigger margin calls and forced selling across bonds and equities, with unclear consequences for the broader economy.
