Researchers have trained an AI model to identify microscopic precancerous changes in imaging that radiologists currently miss, potentially pushing detection back 3-5 years when intervention is most effective. This applies machine vision to a disease with notoriously poor survival rates—pancreatic cancer kills 95% of patients within five years partly because it's caught late. The open question is whether hospitals will integrate this into screening workflows and whether early detection at this scale translates to lives saved versus overtreatment. The constraint has shifted from technical capability to clinical adoption and validation in prospective trials.
