Anthropic discovered that infostealer malware on user machines was hijacking Claude sessions to drain paid usage credits—a supply-side attack that exploits the friction between consumer convenience (saved payment methods) and account security. Attackers are now targeting generative AI accounts not for data exfiltration but for computational arbitrage, since Claude API credits have resale value on dark markets. This is a new class of AI consumer risk. The forced logout and payment method removal show that AI platforms will need to treat account compromise as a primary security vector, not a secondary concern, as the economics of stolen compute become more attractive than traditional credential theft.
