Boise is using its existing geothermal infrastructure—already the nation's largest district heating system—to address housing affordability, converting a decades-old technical asset into policy leverage. Cities with inherited geothermal systems gain a competitive advantage in meeting climate and housing goals at once. Those without must pursue more expensive decarbonization paths.
