A randomized trial of over 1,000 students found that AI tutoring systems produce measurable academic gains, questioning the premise that AI inherently degrades student learning. How students use AI tools matters more than whether they use them. For parents and educators, the implication is direct: restricting access may be less effective than teaching students to use AI as a learning tool, much as calculators reshaped math instruction without destroying it. Edtech products that cannot document comparable learning gains will face scrutiny.
