Chinese squid imports bypass labor abuse scrutiny in Western markets

Despite documented labor exploitation on Chinese fishing vessels operating in international waters, squid products enter Western supply chains with minimal traceability requirements. Retailers and consumers who demand ethical sourcing standards for other seafood bypass those same standards for squid. The gap reflects a structural vulnerability in corporate compliance frameworks. Squid's fragmented supply chains and multiple intermediate processors make origin easier to obscure than tracked fisheries like salmon or shrimp. Regulators and brands have largely ignored this logistics problem that has become a moral one.
