Customer Success Hiring Ignores Formal Certifications

Despite the proliferation of CSM credential programs over the past five years, employers posting to TopCSJobs almost never list certifications as requirements or preferences—only 2 of 373 postings mentioned them. Hiring managers prioritize direct experience and domain knowledge over standardized credentials. The certification industry is growing, but credentials appear largely irrelevant to career advancement in the role. The gap between credential supply and actual hiring demand points to either a design problem in how CS certifications are constructed, or a mismatch between what certification bodies are selling and what companies actually need to evaluate CS talent.
