The physical infrastructure of AI and cloud computing—massive power-hungry facilities concentrated in specific regions—is creating new political coalitions and conflicts that don't map onto traditional left-right axes. Communities near data centers face tangible tradeoffs: water depletion, power grid strain, economic opportunity. These force local politicians to negotiate directly with tech companies rather than through party machinery, fragmenting state-level political coherence. Tech policy increasingly happens at the municipal level, and data center siting has become as contentious as nuclear plants once were.
