Malaysia's electricity infrastructure wasn't built for the continental server farm footprint now arriving—data centres consume 3-5x the power density of traditional industrial loads, forcing the grid operator to simultaneously upgrade generation, transmission, and distribution while negotiating with tenants locked into low fixed-rate power contracts from the 2010s. The bottleneck sits in the timeline mismatch: these facilities come online in months, but infrastructure upgrades take years. That gap either drives foreign operators elsewhere via rolling capacity constraints or forces rate hikes that trigger renegotiations and political backlash against the grid operator and hosting providers.
