NewsGuard identified thousands of AI-generated websites copying the design and naming conventions of legitimate news organizations, creating a distribution problem that search engines and social platforms haven't solved. Consumers who can't distinguish real outlets from spoofed ones will either abandon news consumption or fall into algorithmic rabbit holes where credibility signals have become meaningless. This undermines the information hygiene that advertising, politics, and consumer trust depend on. The constraint isn't detection technology. The economics of AI content generation now make it cheaper to flood the zone than for platforms to enforce authenticity.
