A hoax skincare brand targeting children—complete with AI-generated influencer testimonials and absurdist messaging—proliferated across TikTok and Instagram before being debunked. The incident exposed two weaknesses: algorithmic amplification of unverified brands and Gen Z's tendency to spread content without verification. Social media's creator economy now lacks basic friction points for distinguishing parody from commerce, making it trivially easy for bad actors to launder false health claims through aesthetics and humor native to the platforms. The mechanism that spread the hoax also distributes legitimate but unregulated skincare, supplements, and wellness products to young consumers with minimal friction or accountability.
