The author argues that despite Anthropic's stated commitments to safety research, the actual operational culture at leading AI labs remains inadequate to the scale of the risks being built. Safety culture—how engineers, researchers, and leadership actually behave when faced with tradeoffs between speed and precaution—is where abstract safety commitments either live or die. A lab can publish all the safety papers it wants, but if corner-cutting and pressure override those values in practice, the papers become cover rather than guardrails. The problem is not that labs lack safety teams or rhetoric, but that safety remains subordinate to capability acceleration in the actual decision-making and incentive structures that determine what gets built and deployed.
