Google's New Privacy Policy Expands Ad Targeting Into Gmail Content

Google has officially clarified that it will analyze Gmail messages to build advertising profiles, closing a loophole that had theoretically protected email from ad targeting since 2017. Gmail has 1.8 billion users and represents the last major consumer communication channel Google hadn't fully monetized for ad personalization. The shift collapses the distinction between search and browsing data—long fair game for targeting—and personal communications, which were historically cordoned off. For advertisers, this unlocks richer behavioral signals. For users, it eliminates a remaining assumption of privacy that most never actually had.
