The viability of traditional comedy-talk formats outside cable distribution networks is no longer theoretical—established talent is actively testing it by migrating to streaming-native operations. This matters because it removes dependency on linear TV's advertising model and carriage negotiations, but introduces different economics: YouTube's algorithm-based discovery competes directly with every other video creator, and late-night's fixed-schedule audience expectations clash with on-demand platform behavior. The outcome will determine whether traditional media talent can own distribution without legacy infrastructure, or whether the format itself requires television's enforced appointment viewing to generate the nightly habit and cultural currency that justifies the production overhead.
