As AI compute demands create unpredictable power spikes, data center operators are deploying on-site battery storage to absorb load fluctuations rather than burning expensive diesel for backup. Battery costs have fallen enough to make arbitrage profitable: facilities can store cheap power during low-demand hours and either use it during peaks or sell it back to utilities, creating a revenue stream that didn't exist five years ago. The model only scales if regulators allow data centers to participate in wholesale energy markets. Grid access rules are now the bottleneck, not hardware.
