Microsoft's withdrawal signals that UK infrastructure—not just chip availability or funding—is the genuine bottleneck for AI expansion. The National Grid cannot reliably supply the power demands of frontier compute clusters. British tech ambitions now depend on unglamorous infrastructure upgrades that take years, not months, creating an opening for competing regions (Ireland, France, Nordic countries) with surplus grid capacity to capture AI investment and talent. This is a hard constraint that no amount of government cheerleading or venture capital can bypass.
