Microsoft's withdrawal from a £2bn data center project exposes hard infrastructure limits now constraining AI expansion in Europe. Britain's grid cannot supply the megawatts needed for modern compute clusters until the 2030s at earliest, forcing hyperscalers to choose between delayed buildouts or redirecting capital elsewhere. The same problem will replicate across energy-constrained regions as AI workload demands outpace grid modernization. The constraint is no longer chip supply or software—it's electrical capacity, and whoever controls spare grid power controls where AI infrastructure gets built.
