Middle schoolers are using Spotify podcast comments as secret chat

Kids are repurposing platform affordances designed for passive consumption into synchronous social spaces, exploiting Spotify's weaker moderation and parental controls compared to TikTok or Discord. This exposes a gap in how platforms understand actual user behavior—NPR's comment section wasn't built for real-time group conversation, but the technical friction of that medium (no notifications, slower responses, less algorithmic amplification) may be what makes it useful to kids seeking unmonitored connection. Restrictive parenting and platform gating don't eliminate youth social needs; they redirect them into spaces where brands and publishers have less visibility into what's happening.
