Most Shopify Stores Fail Basic Agent Commerce Tests

Search Engine Journal tested 122 Shopify stores and found that default "agent-ready" configurations fail when AI assistants encounter real customer questions about logistics and policies. Commerce platforms' automation claims outpace actual infrastructure readiness. The gap is operational: stores lack structured data, clear policies, and routing logic that agents need to handle post-purchase friction without escalating to humans. This exposes a monetization problem for Shopify and AI agent vendors—neither has built the foundational integration layer required to turn agent-ready claims into functional commerce experiences.
