Nearly 1 in 3 Americans rely on AI chatbots for health information

Speed and cost are driving adoption faster than accuracy validation. Twenty-eight percent of Americans now turn to AI chatbots for quick health answers, with a quarter using them to self-diagnose symptoms. Patients are already using LLMs as triage tools before or instead of consulting doctors, despite well-documented hallucination rates and liability gaps that neither AI companies nor health providers have adequately addressed. Healthcare systems and regulators have not caught up to this shift in consumer behavior. The pressure point is the emerging medical liability and patient safety questions when AI confidently provides wrong information at scale.
