Netflix's move to monetize password sharing and introduce ad-supported tiers reintroduced the friction—paywalls, ads, account restrictions—that made cable television vulnerable to disruption. Subscribers proved price-sensitive and willing to churn when value deteriorated, reversing the stickiness of the early streaming era. The assumption that platforms could grow indefinitely by aggregating eyeballs no longer holds.
