PhotoCraft's reverse-engineered Photoshop clone shows that entrenched creative software monopolies can be replicated once their file formats are documented. Power shifts from vendor lock-in to community maintenance. Open-source reconstructions of proprietary tools become viable once specifications leak or are inferred, exposing subscription-based SaaS models that rely on switching costs rather than feature superiority. Adobe's decade-long dominance in professional creative workflows faces the same vulnerability that befell Office, Illustrator predecessors, and other platforms once considered irreplaceable.
