The CrowdStrike outage—a faulty update cascading through enterprise systems—exposes a market failure in critical infrastructure: millions of organizations depend on free or minimally-funded software maintained by volunteers with zero redundancy. The cost of vulnerability is socialized (everyone's sites down, supply chains frozen) while maintenance costs are privatized to underfunded maintainers. This creates a structural incentive for security shortcuts. Until corporations treating open source as a free tier accept accountability through direct funding or liability, similar outages will recur.
