OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google Form Secret AI Safety Alliance

Three of the industry's most competitive players have formalized cross-company collaboration on AI safety standards. The move could reflect genuine technical alignment on existential risks or a coordinated effort to shape regulatory outcomes before governments impose their own frameworks. The partnership is private rather than public—these companies could have announced it to build trust with policymakers and the public, but did not. That choice raises a basic question: are they solving hard technical problems or preempting external oversight. The distinction matters. AI safety governance remains fragmented. If these three establish de facto standards in private, they may set the floor for the entire industry while preserving the appearance of competition.
