OpenAI discovered that human contractors hired to improve its models were using AI tools to automate their labeling and feedback tasks—essentially delegating their own labor back to machines, which defeats the purpose of human oversight in model refinement. When you hire contractors at scale to perform repetitive annotation work, they have every economic reason to automate it away. OpenAI apparently lacked the monitoring infrastructure to catch it until after the fact. The incident exposes a structural weakness: AI labs depend on human judgment at critical junctures while treating that labor as a cost to minimize rather than a capability to protect.
