OpenAI released a system capable of formal mathematical reasoning at scale—moving beyond pattern matching to rigorous proof verification. Mathematics is the substrate for physics, cryptography, and automated reasoning. An AI system that can construct and verify proofs creates new possibilities for discovery in these fields while also exposing which human mathematical intuitions require formal rigor versus which are heuristic shortcuts. Whoever owns reliable formal reasoning owns a significant portion of the AI capability stack for the next decade.
