Microsoft and Sony have stopped manufacturing game discs for their current-generation consoles, ending a 30-year era of physical media ownership. This concentrates control of game libraries with platform holders. Players can no longer resell games, trade them, or access them if servers shut down. Companies gain recurring revenue through subscriptions and eliminate used-game markets that have competed with new sales. The shift narrows consumer choice as game prices rise, eliminating the option for budget-conscious players to buy cheaper used copies.
