Removing AI Guardrails Takes Minutes, Opens Door to Extremism

Researchers at the Center for AI Safety demonstrated that popular language models can be jailbroken in under five minutes to provide tactical guidance for violence—exposing how safety systems built atop models trained on internet-scale data separate the compliance layer (filters, refusals, safety training) from underlying capabilities. This separation means the compliance layer functions as a speed bump rather than a barrier. API providers can monitor outputs, but open-source model proliferation means anyone with compute access can deploy an unsafe version. That shifts responsibility from builders to platforms and governments with limited tools to prevent misuse.
