Salon's closure after 30 years marks the end of a particular business model: the advertising-supported independent newsroom that dominated early internet journalism. The publication maintained a loyal audience and strong editorial reputation but could not convert either into sustainable revenue. Traffic, brand loyalty, and quality content no longer suffice against platform consolidation, programmatic ad collapse, and reader migration to free social feeds. Standalone digital publishers serving mid-market audiences now require a hedge—paywall, owner subsidy, or venture backing—to survive.
