Water heaters represent a significant untapped flexibility resource. The average American home has 40+ gallons of thermal mass that can shift heating cycles by hours without user discomfort, effectively creating a distributed battery. Grid operators face peak demand moments where a few gigawatts of flexible load could eliminate blackouts or avoid expensive peaker plants. By turning millions of water heaters into responsive devices via smart controls and demand-response programs, utilities gain load flexibility cheaper and faster than building new generation or storage. A single water heater costs $1,500-2,500 to install versus tens of millions for a gas plant. Aggregated fleets can be orchestrated in real-time, making water heaters one of the few demand-side resources that doesn't require consumer behavior change.
