Creators face a deterioration in the implicit bargain that made internet publishing viable—exposure and income in exchange for free content—as AI companies systematically harvest work at scale without consent or compensation. Meta's shift toward AI training, combined with algorithmic suppression of organic reach, has created a dual collapse where creators simultaneously lose discovery mechanisms and lose control over their intellectual property, leaving knowledge workers with diminishing reasons to publish publicly. The question is whether platforms will be forced to establish explicit, compensatory relationships with creators before the economic incentive to produce at all evaporates.
