As AI tools lower the barrier to creating convincing versions of existing songs, rights holders and platforms face a test case they've largely avoided: whether remix culture—long tolerated in informal spaces—remains protected when the remixer is an algorithm trained on copyrighted material. Labels and studios are preparing licensing frameworks and takedown strategies now, before AI-generated covers become ubiquitous enough to force statutory precedent. Early movers will effectively write the rules.
