As AI infrastructure demands explode, the unglamorous work of siting, permitting, and operating data centers—what insiders call becoming "Data Center Dave"—is becoming a bottleneck no one wants to own. Career stigma around infrastructure work, community opposition, environmental reviews, and the sheer tedium mean the industry faces a genuine talent gap at the moment when building compute capacity is the actual constraint on AI scaling. The most capital-intensive, politically fraught part of the AI buildout is being deprioritized by technologists chasing algorithmic problems, leaving AWS, Google, and Microsoft scrambling to fill roles that require deep regulatory and real estate knowledge.
