The Post's pivot toward per-article purchases addresses friction that killed previous micropayment attempts. By bundling small purchases into a wallet system and removing checkout friction, it targets casual readers who won't commit to subscriptions—a segment that generated meaningful revenue for Wired and the NYT before they abandoned micropayments. The test is whether the Post can scale without cannibalizing subscription revenue. If it succeeds, publishers may reverse two decades of forced subscription consolidation.
