The term "AGI" has become a rhetorical weapon rather than a technical definition. Nvidia's Jensen Huang and OpenAI's leadership invoke it to justify trillion-dollar infrastructure investments and regulatory positioning, while offering no measurable criteria for when it arrives. This semantic inflation allows executives to claim epochal breakthroughs are imminent without accountability, shifting public and policy focus away from near-term harms—labor displacement, training data theft, energy consumption—toward speculative long-term risks that justify their continued dominance. Pinning down AGI would expose how incremental current progress actually is, and how much of the narrative depends on exponential-curve faith rather than demonstrated capability. The vagueness is intentional.
