Elon Musk's decision to cap Grok Bot usage because serving it costs xAI more than customers pay exposes a structural problem in agent economics: the value an AI creates for a user doesn't automatically align with the cost to the provider. AI agents are collapsing the economics of work delegation—individuals can now afford tasks that previously required hiring teams—but providers haven't figured out how to make that math work at scale. The agents that survive will be those that either serve high-value use cases or force users to internalize costs rather than subsidize them.
