As AI assistants become frictionless defaults for research, writing, and decision-making, some users are abandoning their own cognitive effort entirely—asking ChatGPT which restaurant to visit or letting it compose professional emails without review. This creates a vulnerability: people who lose the skill or patience to think critically become dependent on black-box outputs, unable to evaluate quality or catch errors.
