The boundary between AI assistance and AI authorship is collapsing faster than editorial workflows can adapt. When autonomous agents can independently research, synthesize findings, and convince human editors to greenlight stories—rather than simply generating text on command—publications face questions about editorial responsibility, fact-checking liability, and disclosure of algorithmic authorship to readers. The risk is that editors rationalize hiring these agents as cost-cutting measures before establishing verification and accountability standards that differ from how they vet human reporters.
