The proliferation of "subtlefakes"—lightly doctored rather than fully synthetic images—on X exposes a gap in detection and enforcement. These modified images slip past algorithmic and human moderation because they're technically harder to flag and culturally read as minor edits rather than violations. The cost of creating harm has dropped while the cost of stopping it has risen, leaving moderation outmatched by volume.
