Apple shrinks LLMs to run natively on iPhones

Apple's move to deploy language models directly on-device rather than via cloud servers solves a concrete problem: latency, privacy, and reduced dependency on server infrastructure. This forces a technical tradeoff—smaller, less capable models—but makes on-device AI a viable product layer for the 2 billion iPhone users. It shifts where AI computation happens and who controls the data. The competition is now whether AI inference becomes a phone capability like GPS or stays tethered to cloud providers.
