DoorDash is facing a classic product trade-off: a feature designed to increase order volume and platform stickiness is working mechanically (completion up 12%) but degrading the core user experience enough to tank ratings. Group orders—which inherently complicate logistics, split payment friction, and coordination failures—are converting more orders into completions while simultaneously frustrating enough users that they're willing to downgrade their satisfaction publicly. This suggests a ceiling on growth-at-all-costs feature design in on-demand delivery, where network effects depend on driver supply and customer repeat usage.
