Kratom and other botanical opioids are moving through convenience retail by exploiting regulatory gaps—the same channels that normalized nicotine products. They create a consumer class that bypasses pharmaceutical gatekeeping. Unlike prescription opioids, these products arrive with minimal warning labeling, no dosing standards, and marketing designed to evade DEA attention. They compete directly with both illicit and licit pain management. The shift from pharmacy to gas station changes the buyer profile (impulse consumers rather than patients with medical histories) and accountability structure (retailers and distributors with minimal oversight infrastructure).
