General Motors is abandoning its all-or-nothing EV strategy after years of dismissing hybrids as a transition technology. Battery-only powertrains alone won't capture the mass market it needs to compete with Toyota and Honda. Consumer demand for cheaper, lower-range EVs remains soft, while hybrid SUVs—which eliminate range anxiety without full battery costs—are where actual sales volume lives. Winning in automotive means meeting customers where they are, not where GM hoped they'd be.
