The proliferation of cheaply-generated AI content across platforms like TikTok and Instagram forces consumers to forensically evaluate whether content is authentic before trusting it. This degrades user experience in niche communities (gaming, art, music, fashion) where hobbyists relied on peer-generated content for discovery and credibility. Some users are retreating to private Discord servers or paying for curated alternatives. Platforms have little incentive to fix this since AI-generated engagement still fuels algorithmic ranking and ad revenue, offloading the cognitive labor of filtering onto individual users.
