While a French borehole suggests hydrogen can accumulate in exploitable quantities underground, the industry is struggling with basic prospecting challenges—well location, drilling costs, and extraction viability remain largely unsolved problems. Natural hydrogen promised to sidestep the energy intensity of green hydrogen production, but if companies can't reliably find and extract it at scale, the infrastructure advantage disappears and capital will continue flowing toward electrolysis instead.
