Newsrooms are abandoning the old Rolodex model and posting openly on LinkedIn to crowdsource sources and expert voices. This shifts reporting work from behind-the-scenes to public performance—a move driven by tightened budgets and fewer research resources, but enabled by LinkedIn's ability to reach niche experts more efficiently than cold calls. The tradeoff: editorial processes once confidential are now visible, and sources negotiate their involvement publicly rather than in protected off-record conversations.
