The real problem with AI benchmarks isn't the scores

Artificial Analysis released a fifth version of their LLM evaluation framework. The core tension Nathan Lambert identifies cuts deeper than any single benchmark update: the metrics themselves have become the optimization target, making it nearly impossible to distinguish between genuine capability improvements and systems designed to game specific tests. This mirrors a classical measurement problem in machine learning—once a metric becomes a goal, it ceases to be a good metric—except now it's playing out across the entire industry. Model developers and evaluators are locked in an adversarial cycle that obscures what these systems actually do well or poorly in practice.
