Film Critics and Audiences Have Stopped Agreeing on Movies

The Economist analyzed 20 years of Metacritic data and found a widening gap between critical consensus and audience ratings. Critics evaluate a narrower canon of films intended as art; audiences rate a much broader universe of entertainment. This split matters because there's no longer a shared cultural reference point. Where critics once legitimized certain tastes as correct, audiences now vote with their wallets and algorithms for different values. Films accumulate less cross-generational cultural weight as a result.
